Unboxing and Size Comparison of Wargames Atlantic Grand Battle scale 10mm Command and Ashigaru

I was in my FLGS today and noticed they had some boxes from Wargames Atlantics "Grand Battle Scale" in stock.

For anyone that hasn't seen of heard about them, this is Wargames Atlantics 10mm Samurai range.

I'd been considering picking some up for a while as I spent far too many hours when I was younger playing Shogun Total war, and so today I finally gave in.

The two boxes they had in stock were the "Samurai Army Command" and the "Ashigaru"; they also do a box of Samurai, but these were not available in store today.

I've been a fan of 15mm and 10mm models for a long time.

I don't always have the space needed to set up large battles with 28mm miniatures, and so over the years have found myself playing more games designed for that scale with 15mm miniatures and just using cm instead of inches.

For this reason I was very excited when Warlord released their "Epic Battles" range; but as much as I love those miniatures, I was disappointed that the stands are ten figures wide, making them hard to use for other rulesets.

WA get around this cleverly by giving you varying width groups; the Infantry for example coming in 5, 3, 2 and individuals on the same sprue. Meaning I can use them for Black Powder, but I can also use them as units of width of 5 to 10 easily enough and am also able to have casualty removal (something that has always been important to me when playing, I might be old fashioned, but I like to see my opponents units shrink as I cause casualties).

So let's take a look at the Sprues; I'll show a sprue from each box, some measurements, and a size comparison to Epic Battles.

This is the Command Sprue, you get two of these in the box. It gives you both messengers, mounted and on foot, drummers, banner bearers, Generals and enough Jinmaku sections to create two command dioramas.

The Ashigaru sprue gives you yari, naginata yumi and teppo armed Ashigaru, more than enough for a small army.

The detail in the miniatures is very good for such a small scale; I expect I will do most of the painting while they are on the Sprue and tidy up afterwards.

As far as size is concerned, the infantry measure 10mm from bottom of foot to eye level

While the mounted figures are around 17mm to eye level

Comparing them to Warlord Games Epic Scale, they are around a head shorter, as you would expect with the Epic Battles range being around 13.5mm, but as a push you could use the two together.

Overall i'm very happy with them and once I have painted them up i'll post more pictures (and likely buy a Samurai box to go with them)
